Open-Source WhatsApp Automation Tools for UAE Businesses: What to Use and What to Avoid
Short answer
Use n8n for workflows, Chatwoot for a shared inbox, and the official WhatsApp Business Platform for customer messaging. Libraries like Baileys and whatsapp-web.js are unofficial and can get a number blocked.

For WhatsApp lead follow-up, the open-source tools worth knowing are n8n for workflows, Chatwoot for a shared inbox, and WhatsApp gateways such as Evolution API and WAHA. The catch: gateways built on Baileys or whatsapp-web.js are unofficial, and WhatsApp can block numbers that use them. For customer-facing messaging, the official WhatsApp Business Platform is the safer base.
The two kinds of WhatsApp automation
Almost every tool in this space falls into one of two groups. The first uses the official WhatsApp Business Platform (the Cloud API), which Meta documents and supports. The second reverse-engineers the WhatsApp Web protocol, so a script can log in like a browser would. Open-source libraries mostly sit in the second group.
The difference matters because of what happens when something goes wrong. Meta's Cloud API documentation says use of the platform must comply with its terms and policies and that using unauthorized third-party tools is prohibited. Plan around that sentence before choosing anything below.
n8n: the workflow layer
n8n describes itself as a fair-code platform to build and deploy AI agents and workflows. It is not a WhatsApp library. It is the glue: a form submission arrives, n8n adds the lead to a spreadsheet or CRM, sends a message, and creates a reminder for your team. Its README says it is distributed under the Sustainable Use License, which is source-available rather than a standard open-source licence, so read the terms before using it in a commercial product. For how this looks in practice, see our n8n workflow automation service.
Chatwoot: a shared inbox for your team
Chatwoot calls itself an open-source alternative to Intercom and Zendesk, and its README lists WhatsApp among supported channels. It is released under the MIT licence. It suits a team of several people who need to answer customers from one place, assign conversations and keep history, instead of passing one phone around.
Gateways: Evolution API and WAHA
Evolution API is described in its README as an open-source REST API for WhatsApp and multi-channel messaging, under Apache 2.0 with extra brand-protection conditions. WAHA is a WhatsApp HTTP API you install on your own server, under Apache-2.0. Both turn WhatsApp into simple web requests that n8n can call.
Read the fine print. The Evolution API README says its Baileys-based connection relies on the web version of WhatsApp and may have limitations compared with official APIs, and that the Cloud API option requires compliance with Meta's policies and may carry per-message costs. The same trade-off applies to WAHA, which offers several engines.
The libraries underneath: Baileys and whatsapp-web.js
Baileys (MIT) is a WebSockets-based TypeScript library for the WhatsApp Web API. whatsapp-web.js (Apache-2.0) is a Node.js client that connects through the WhatsApp Web browser app. Both are widely used by developers and both carry disclaimers.
- Baileys says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by WhatsApp, does not condone use that violates WhatsApp's Terms of Service, and discourages bulk or automated messaging.
- whatsapp-web.js says it is not guaranteed you will not be blocked, and that WhatsApp does not allow bots or unofficial clients on its platform.
Treat these as tools for experiments and internal notifications on a number you can afford to lose, not as the foundation of your main sales line.
Rules that apply whichever tool you pick
The WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy (updated September 2026) says you may only contact people who have given you their number and opted in, and that you may only start conversations with an approved message template. It also says WhatsApp can limit or remove access for messaging people at scale in an unauthorized manner.
In practice that means:
- Record where and when each person opted in, and what they agreed to receive.
- Make stopping easy, for example by honouring a reply of STOP.
- Never message numbers from a scraped list.
- Keep personal data handling in line with UAE data protection rules; check current rules with the regulator or a lawyer.
A sensible setup for a UAE business
- Capture the lead from a web form or an inbound WhatsApp message, with consent wording on the form.
- Route it with n8n into your CRM or sheet. Our CRM and webhook integrations page covers the typical pieces.
- Send the first reply through the official Business Platform, using an approved template if the customer has not messaged you in the last conversation window.
- Hand over to a person in a shared inbox such as Chatwoot once the customer replies with a real question.
- Add reminders for your team, not endless automatic follow-ups to the customer.
If you want this built for a clinic, agency or real estate team, our WhatsApp AI bots service starts from the official platform.
Red flags before you install anything
- A tutorial that promises "unlimited" messages from a normal number.
- A repository with no recent activity or no clear licence.
- Hosting that exposes the gateway's API to the open internet without authentication.
- No plan for what happens if the number is blocked.
- Bulk sending to people who never asked to hear from you.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to run a WhatsApp bot built on an unofficial open-source library?
It carries real risk. The Baileys and whatsapp-web.js READMEs both warn that the libraries are not endorsed by WhatsApp, and whatsapp-web.js says an account is not guaranteed to avoid being blocked. For a number your business depends on, use the official WhatsApp Business Platform instead.
Do I need a developer to use these tools?
For most of them, yes. n8n has a visual editor, but hosting, security, webhooks and message templates still need technical care. A simple internal workflow is a reasonable thing to try yourself; a customer-facing lead flow is better built and reviewed by someone who has done it before.
